The teams are divided into two pools; A and B and they will start by playing in a Round-Robin format among each other pool members and this will be the preliminary stage that will be made up of 34 matches that will start from the 6th and end 13th of August. The 4 top teams in each pool will advance to quarter’s finals with only 4 nations making it to the Semifinals.
Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Hockey Women Teams that will feature
There are already 12 qualified teams who will participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics sports, these qualified teams are:- South Korea who qualified in the 2014 Asian Games which took place in their own country between 20th September and 2nd October 2014. More 8 teams qualified in 2 editions of the FIH Hockey world league Finals of 2014 and 2015. The first sessions of those leagues took place in Spain, Valencia between June 10 to June 21 2015 and Argentina, China, host Spain and Germany qualified for Rio 2016.
The other edition of FIH Hockey World League Final took place from June 20 to July 15th 2015 and was held in Antwerp, Belgium. In this championship, India, Japan, Netherlands and New Zealand qualified. By now 9 out 12 slots for Rio 2016 Summer Olympics had been filled up; the remaining continents were Africa and North America while there were still extra slots for Europe and Oceania. The 13th to 24th of July Pan American Games of 2015 held in Toronto Canada saw the USA women Hockey Team qualify for Rio 2016, while 2015 Euro Hockey Nations Championship held in London between 22nd to 30th of August 2015 saw the Host Great Britain qualify for a women Hockey slot in the Rio 2016 Summer Games. Later in 2015, in the Oceania Cup played between the 21st and 25th of October in New Zealand Australia qualified for a slot in Rio 2016. Africa Qualifying Tournament held in S. Africa’s city of Randburg from 23rd to 1st November 2015 saw S. Africa women qualify to represent Africa in Rio 2016. However S.A declined to take the slot and the chance was taken by Spain; the highest ranked team during the 2014-15 Hockey World League. This means to no women African Hockey team will be present in Rio.

Once the preliminaries or the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Women Hockey Group matches are over, 4 teams from each of the 2 groups will qualify and proceed to the knockout stage.
8 teams will start with the quarterfinals, then 4 teams will proceed to the semifinals after which medal matches will determine Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Women Field Hockey Champions and the other top 3 teams or nations.
