Hockey at the Summer Olympics

Hockey is part of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics games, for both men and women. Field Hockey has been part of the Summer Olympics since the 1908 London Summer Olympic, the third edition of the games.

Field Hockey would miss in the 1924 as it lacked credible institution to regulate and manage it. With the formation of International Hockey Federation, it featured in any of the following editions of the 1928 Summer Olympics and later.

India is the most successful team in the Summer Olympics games have won 8 gold medals in the following editions of the Summer Olympics; 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956 and 1964. The first nation to win the field hockey gold was Great Britain in the 1908 London Summer Olympics and they repeated the feat by winning the 1912 Summer Olympics hockey sport gold medal.

Germany has the latest two editions gold medals, the men hockey gold medal for 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing, China and the 2012 London Summer Olympics games.

They had previously won he summer Olympics hockey gold medal in the 1972 Summer Olympics when they hosted the games and the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain.

Pakistan is yet another Asian nation that has dominated the Summer Olympics hockey sport, they won a gold first in the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome, they later would win the 1968 Mexico Summer Olympics and finally in the 1984 Los Angeles edition of the Summer Olympics.

From the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, India and Pakistan dominance in the hockey sport was halted. First by Great Britain who got a gold medal in the Seoul games and 4 years later German took home the men hockey medal while 2000 and 2004 summer edition gold medal for men hockey sport went to Netherlands.

Women Hokey would not feature in the Summer Olympics until the 1980 Moscow edition of the games.

But where was hockey invented?

Historical evidence suggests that hockey may have been invented in Africa and they are evidence of the hockey playing clubs discovered in Ethiopia and Egypt. These hockey sticks date back to over 1000 years before the birth of Christ. It may have spread to Europe as there historical evidence of hockey clubs or sticks which dates back to 600 years before Christ, while those hockey discovered in Ireland dates back to 1200 years before Christ. This exciting game spread to Mongolia too.

Field Hockey at Rio 2016 Summer Olympics

In the Rio games filed hockey will take place from the 7th of August all the way to the second last day of the games; 20th August and will take place at the Olympic Hockey Center.

There are 12 men teams and 12 women teams in the Rio Summer Olympics Hockey sport. To compete the twelve men teams and twelve women teams are divided into two pools and they play in a round robin game format among each other. Any two teams which top the pool will advance to semifinals and the winners will go for the finals or the gold medal match, while those who loose at semifinals compete for the bronze medal.

To qualify for the Rio games or any other Summer Olympics for that matter the teams must be affiliated with IOC and International Hockey Federation; which is world hockey governing body.

In Olympics, Filed Hockey is an outdoor sport which is played in the Summer Olympics while Ice Hockey is played in the Winter Olympics; we are more concerned with field hockey which will be contested in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

Field hockey is played using a ball that is about 7 centimeters in diameter and its formation is similar to that of football. Hockey sticks are used to push the ball towards the opponents’ small goals for a score. It’s a team game
