Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Fencing Schedule

Events in fencing are classified by the type of weapons used and in the Olympics only three types of weapon are allowed.

These three weapons are:

Foil, a light weapon, which in the olden days was a practicing weapon and the only weapon women were allowed to use in sports. When using foil in the Olympics one is only allowed to thrust towards the opponents’ upper body and double touches are prohibited

Epee is the other type of weapon used in fencing, heavier than foil. In the olden days the use of epee was measured using real cuts and thrusts. In the Olympics, unlike the foil events, one is allowed to trust the weapon to opponents’ whole body plus the double touches are not restricted.

Sabre is very similar to epee, but lighter in its thrusts and cuts. The players are allowed to attack their opponents anywhere above the waists but no attacking the back, the head and the hands, besides, like the foil, no double touches are allowed.

The terms foil, epee and sabre originated in France. In Summer Olympics fencing points are awarded by the number of cuts, thrusts and pares, just like in the olden days, however the cuts are not real and no one is injured.
